Man, I can not believe I have not read anything from Ava Manello before! But, I'm really glad I started with this book. The 2 main characters in this book Declan & Holly are both suffering from PTSD. Even thought it's from 2 different reasons the battle is still the same. The author definitely did her research and wrote it right.
Declan is an Australian Special Air Regiment Corporal as part of 4 Squadron and this is his and his crew's last, and it's back to being a civilian. If that wasn't hard enough for him to get a hold of. Their last day wasn't what they had hoped. Now, him & his guys are all back home. And, not all of them are in the best places. Including Declan who might look fine on the outside. But, the nightmares and the way he's jumpy. Him and the guys have a rule that if 1 of them needs help they will be there to help. When 1 of them doesn't want the help Declan takes it as a fail for him. When his best friend talks him into going away Declan accepts it.
Declan and his best friend Cam get on their bikes and ride cross country and end up in Severed. Now, if you read other books by this author Severed sounds familiar. Her last series Severed MC Series followed the MC and Holly. Me not reading it was worried I'd be lost. But, I wasn't YAY!!
Declan gets very comfortable in Severed very quickly. He meets Holly who's uncle is The President of Severed MC. They've had a lot of loss lately. Too much for most people to deal with. Holly and Declan have an instant connection. They both can see the pain and hurt in the other one's eyes. But, they don't push for the answers. They know when they're ready they'll open up.Until they they are enjoying each other.
When Declan finds out the bar is for sale he jumps at buying it. He likes being in Severed and thinks it'll be good for him mentally. Holly is stoked Declan is staying too. Declan calls some of his friends and Cam stay a little longer and he redoes the bar and has a grand reopening. He's happy.
Declan realizes very quickly that there's a lot of shady stuff going down in this town. The MC reaches out to Declan. First as a "this is our town" type of thing but then they realize they really are about the same thing. Family. Friends. Loyalty. Declan realizes that he wants to help the MC, Holly, Severed and his life in this new place. He reaches out to his friends & contacts in the military.
This was such a fast paced book. I literally read it in one day. Declan is such a great guy. He took his job in the military seriously. He's the one to look out for everyone. And, when he felt like he failed them it killed him. Declan is such a loyal man. He helped a town without really knowing many of them that much. Holly was a very strong woman. I don't think she even realized how strong she is. Declan definitely tried pushing her away. And, I understood why. He was scared. Afraid of hurting her and not wanting to admitting to get help. Holly never backed down and I was happy.
